He wasn’t sure what woke him, but he automatically turned to her. She was watching him. “Scully? You okay?”
“I think it’s time.”
“The baby?”
She nodded, not speaking. He thought she seemed very near tears. He drew her close to him. “Everything is going to be okay Scully.”
“I know.” She said it faintly, and he loosened his grip of her to look at her face. His hand went to her cheek and she seemed to lean into it. “I need to get up.”
His arms were there automatically as she levered herself up from the bed. “I’ll make the phone calls.” She nodded but didn’t turn as she headed for the bathroom.
He made two quick phone calls, then threw on his own clothes. He tried to ignore the fact that his hands were shaking slightly.
When she emerged from the bathroom, she’d changed into one of her softest, largest smocks. She stopped just to watch him as he gathered the last minute items and stuffed them into her bag. It was still hard for her to realize he was here, truly here, not a dream. Actually living here with her as the birth approached.
He looked up when he realized she was there. “You ready?”
She nodded and moved slowly toward him. She was so beautiful, almost luminous. He’d always assumed that comments like that were made to make the pregnant woman feel good, he had never realized that it was true before her.
He moved her toward the door, “Just a minute.” He halted immediately and watched in fascination as her breathing changed and she leaned slightly against him. “Okay, let’s do this.”
He nodded, unsure what words to use and helped her to the car. He seated her and buckled her in, which she indulged with a slight smile. He hurried to get in himself and after one last look over at her, started the car. No turning back now.
They were silent, but it wasn’t uncomfortable. Her hands made unconscious circles on her stomach and he tried to concentrate on driving. It was still early; traffic was light.
He heard her breathing change and his hand left the steering wheel to touch her. Her stomach seemed as hard as a rock with the contraction. Her hand joined his and gripped it slightly.
When the contraction ended she relaxed back in the seat. “Scully, I could still call your mother. It’s not too late.”
“No.
It’s better if she’s not involved.
We don’t know . . . “
He nodded and dropped it. Whatever she wanted.
*****
They arrived at the small clinic shortly and he spotted Skinner’s car. It surprised him a little at the relief he felt just seeing the man’s car. He pulled up to the closest parking space and hurried around the car to help her get out.
He opened the car door and reached for
her hand. “Wait.” Even in his inexperience, he could see that the
contractions were stronger already.
He squatted in the door holding her hand. When it began to ease, he drew her attention to him. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine Mulder.” She spotted the wince he tried to hide at those words. “Mulder, I’m as fine as I can be. I am having a baby.”
He grinned then. She had no business wasting energy looking after him right now.
“I’m so glad you’re here.” It was just a whisper but it came from the depths of her soul and he heard that. He nodded around the lump in his own throat.
“We should get you inside and settled.”
She nodded then and twisted in the seat to allow his arms to go around her to get her to her feet.
“Do you need a wheelchair?”
She shook her head, pulling his arm around her. He complied readily, placing a kiss on her forehead.
There was no one at the desk, not at this hour, but Skinner had heard the door open and came out from the back to meet them. He couldn’t stop his eyes from scanning her and she smiled indulgently.
“Thanks for being here Walter.”
“No place I’d rather be, Dana.”
“Are the guys here?” Mulder looked past him.
“Yeah, they’re setting up now. Doggett’s helping them.”
Scully turned to Mulder then, “Agent Doggett’s here?”
“The more the merrier.” Was his only comment. He’d have a platoon of Marines here if he thought she and the baby would be safer that way.
He felt her lean against him and the tempo of her breathing changed. He glanced at Skinner who had gone dead quiet and seemed to be holding his own breath. When she relaxed he looked back up at Skinner. “Let’s get her settled.” Skinner nodded and took her other arm.
The nurse practitioner and mid-wife, Nikki, met them just outside of the examining room. “Hi Dana. You doing okay?” Dana nodded. “Do you want to change into a gown, or stay in that? I’ll tell you, what you’re wearing will probably be more comfortable – it’s softer and plenty big enough. That’s if you don’t mind it getting ruined.”
“I think I’ll stay in this.”
“Good, come on in. I’ll need to examine you.” Scully nodded and let the two men assist her up onto the table. “Okay guys, if you’ll just step outside - “
“No.” They said it together and Skinner had to scrub at his face to hide the smile.
Nikki looked at them for an instant. “Excuse me?”
“I’m not leaving.” He said it quietly, but left no doubt that he was serious. She looked over at Scully, who nodded.
“Okay. What about him?” She looked over at Skinner.
Skinner looked up. “Uh, I’m outta here. If you need anything . . . “
Mulder nodded.
“You need to lie down Dana. Has your water broken?” Dana shook her head. “I’ll be as quick and gentle as I can, try to relax.” Nikki slapped on her gloves. “Put your knees up, there, yes. Now scootch down. That ‘s good.”
Mulder concentrated on her face. This was being gentle?
“Okay, I’m through.” She pulled off her glove.
He hoped she wouldn’t do that often. Scully’s grip on him during the procedure had been the firmest yet.
Nikki must have felt the heat of his gaze. “It’s necessary, Agent Mulder. Dana, you’re 80% effaced and four centimeters. Not bad. Were you dilated any at your last office visit?”
“Uh, yes. I was at two.”
Mulder turned to look at her stunned. She hadn’t shared that with him. But considering his reaction now, maybe that was a good thing.
“Okay, Dana, your blood pressure is good, your heart rate is good. You know you don’t have to lie here. If you feel like walking, it could speed things along. I’ll be right out here if you need anything.”
“Thanks Nikki.”
Once the door shut, he turned back to her. “Do you feel like walking?”
“I should. Gravity you know.”
He nodded and lifted her from the table. They moved at her pace to the door, but before he
could open it she put her hand on his. “Mulder,
you know how much I appreciate our friends being here to help, but right now I really don’t
want to see anyone. I just want you.”
That statement rendered him speechless for an instant, then he nodded. “Don’t worry about anything.”
She smiled, but it wasn’t full wattage and it vanished as her grip on his hand tightened. “Remember to breathe Scully. Try to relax your toes, wiggle them. That’s good.” When she took her cleansing breath he brushed the hair off of her face. “Want to walk now?”
“Sure.” They headed out into the hall.
She didn’t need to worry. The others kept their distance, but were there if needed. He became adept at reading her body language – something he’d done for years – knowing when a contraction was coming and different positions to support her through them.
She held onto the railing with one hand and him with the other as they slowly made their way up and down the halls. ‘Mmmm, Mulder.”
“Put your arms around my neck Scully. Just hang, I’ve got you.” With complete assurance that he did, she got through the contraction. When it was over, he reached into his pocket and handed her a tube of lip cream.
“Mulder, are you sure you haven’t done this before?” His care of her was extraordinary. He knew what she wanted before she did.
“No Scully, I’m a virgin here.”
“Well, at least I got that.”
He smiled down at her. “I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t have been interested in me when you were eleven.”
She stopped and looked up at him. “You were fourteen? Damn Mulder.” She shook her head laughing. “I don’t know why I’m surprised. You – oh oh oh god, Mulder – “
He tightened his hold of her. That one had caught them both by surprise. “Scully, I’ve got you, breathe
Sweetheart. It’s almost over.”
When it ended, she leaned heavily against him. “New rules Mulder. Don’t make me laugh.”
“Got it. Do you want to keep walking?”
She nodded wearily. His estimation of her strength went up yet another notch.
She had quit speaking as they continued,
and he grew quieter, not wanting to distract her from her concentration. He was more than ready to go back to the room. In his estimation she’d been on her feet long
enough, but this was her show.
“Mul – “ He had her, again letting her hang from him. His grip tightened as he realized her knees had buckled completely. When she could speak again, she didn’t look at him, “I need to lie down.”
He nodded, even though she wasn’t looking. “Do you want me to carry you?”
“No, just hold on to me.”
“Always.” That did elicit a tired smile and they returned to the room.
Nikki met them just outside. “Dana, how are you doing?”
“She needs to get off of her feet for now.” Mulder answered for her and Nikki nodded, taking her other arm.
Once settled in the bed, Nikki reached for a glove. “Dana, I need to check you again.”
Mulder tensed immediately, but kept quiet with effort. Nikki glanced at him, but didn’t ask him to leave. “Try to relax Dana.”
Her eyes were closed and she couldn’t quite stifle a moan at the intrusion. Mulder closed his own eyes.
“You’re doing great, Dana. Fully effaced, seven centimeters. If we strip your membranes, that could speed things up.”
Strip what? Mulder’s eyes flew open. Nikki looked over at him, “Break her water.” He subsided, that he understood.
“Do it.” She already sounded exhausted.
“Okay. You know this is going to make your contractions more intense?”
More intense? Again his head came up.
Nikki looked at him indulgently, “That’s why they call it labor, Agent Mulder.” Then she turned to get an instrument.
His eyes narrowed. One more inanely unhelpful comment like that and he was going to pull the gun from his ankle holster and shoot the bitch between the eyes, so help him.
Scully tugged at his hand and he looked down at her. She had obviously been reading his face. “It’s okay Mulder.”
“Why don’t you let them give you something Scully? You don’t have to - “
“No. It could be dangerous for the baby. No drugs.” End of subject. He made no comment; this was her show all the way.
Nikki returned with what looked for all the world like his mother’s crochet hook. “Okay, Dana, you ready?”
“Yes.” Her eyes flew open wide at the sensation, which was immediately capped by a brutal contraction. When the contraction ended, Mulder dabbed her forehead with a cool cloth.
“You’ll need to stay in the bed Dana. I’m going to go ahead and get Dr. Carruthers over here.”
Well duh, Mulder thought, wisely keeping his mouth shut.
“I want to put the fetal monitor on you now. Agent Mulder, you’ll be able to see the contraction before she feels it and get her ready. That will help her stay on top of them.”
He nodded, anything that would help her at this point. Nikki left them again after setting up the monitor and showing him how to read it. Scully had to verbalize to get through the contractions now, and her moans were grueling for him. He couldn’t help but imagine what it was like for her. He helped her to her side and massaged her back during the contractions.
“Talk!”
“What? Scully what do you need?”
“I need to hear your voice. Talk, please!” She gasped out between breaths.
Talk? About what? He started in on the first thing that came to mind. He described his memory of her coming to his motel room on that first case in Oregon, dropping her robe and exposing her body to him with complete trust. It was something he had never recovered from and was still one of his all time favorite memories of her.
She was concentrating on him, his face, the sound of his voice and managed to survive the next twenty minutes only through his help.
“Get Nikki.”
“Scully?”
“Get Nikki! I have to push.”
He nodded though he didn’t want to release his hold of her. He was at the door in two steps, pulling it open. “Nikki!”
Dr. Carruthers and Skinner were standing in the hall and both reacted to the stress in his voice. “Walter, could you get Nikki for me?”
Skinner nodded, but she was already moving toward the door. She lay what she hoped was a calming hand on Mulder’s arm.
“She says she needs to push.”
Dr. Carruthers moved over to her patient. “Dana, it’s Linda. Mulder says you feel like pushing. Let me do a quick exam.”
Mulder took her hand again and her grip was actually painful. “Dana, we need to roll you to your back. Okay?” Scully didn’t bother to respond. “Mulder, can you help me?”
Gently they moved her to her back, but she groaned anyway and part of him died at the sound. How much longer could she endure this?
“Dana, you’re fully dilated, and the baby is at minus one. I want you to push on the next contraction. Mulder’s going to support your back.” She looked up at him and he nodded.
Nikki had slipped in silently and held a gown for Dr. Carruthers.
“It’s almost over, Dana. Mulder - “ He lifted her shoulders from the bed at the doctor’s nod, he could hear Nikki counting to ten. “That’s great Dana. Take a quick breath and again. Yes . . . “
Thirty minutes and fifteen pushes later, she opened her eyes and looked up at Mulder. “I can’t do this. Mulder, I can’t.”
He glanced up at Linda. “Talk to her” she mouthed to him.
He kissed Scully’s forehead and leaned close to her ear. “Yes, Scully, you can. You can do anything. You’ve proven that to me so many times.”
“I’m tired Mulder. And it hurts so much. Oh god . . . “
Her body was wracked by another contraction and she did try to push, belatedly, but collapsed back against him. “Scully, let me help you. Listen to me, it’s almost over. You can do this.”
At his words, she did manage to push on the next contraction, but shook her head. “Mulder . . . “
“Dana, give me your hand. Mulder too.”
He gave her hand to Linda. “Here Dana. Can you feel that? That’s your baby’s head. He’s right here and he needs you to get him out.”
Her eyes widened, then she took hold of Mulder’s hand and led him to the same place. She saw the awe take over his face and watched his lips move, though no sound emerged. He couldn’t look away from her eyes.
She felt a surge of energy at that look. “Help me, Mulder.”
He nodded moving quickly to support her again. She pushed with new energy then. “Yes, Dana! He’s crowning. A couple of more . . . “
“You’re doing it Scully. I can see him.” His hand caressed her cheek quickly, then he was supporting her again.
“Dana, the head’s out. I want you to pant for just a second.” Linda quickly suctioned out the baby’s nose and mouth. “Just a couple more, Dana.”
“Oh god, Scully. You’re incredible. Come on, just a little longer.”
She took a deep breath and bore down with all of her strength, crying out his name as the shoulders emerged. Mulder wasn’t sure he would ever be able to let her go. He watched in fascination as the baby all but tumbled from her body. Linda brought it up for them to see. “A boy, Dana!”
“Oh my god.” She was reaching for him even as Linda lay the child on her stomach. Scully’s hands were exploring him as he cried out his fury. Mulder couldn’t move, staring at the sight.
“A son, Mulder.” Linda got his attention. “Do you want to cut the cord?”
He glanced quickly at Scully who nodded. He took the scissors that Nikki handed him and cut where Linda indicated. Nikki was already covering the boy, wiping and massaging him.
“Oh Mulder.” He looked back at her then and saw the tears streaming down her face. He was unaware of his own tears until she touched them with her free hand.
“Scully.” It was all he could say, then he was kissing her, his need to touch her not abating.
“Dana, Mulder, we need to clean him up and check him out.”
The conflict within him was etched on his face then. “Mulder,” Scully squeezed his hand. “I’m okay. Stay with him.”
Nikki stopped, the tiny boy in her hands, waiting for instructions. “Mulder, she’s not taking him from this room, just over to that table. You’ll be able to see everything. And remember, Dana’s been my friend longer than you’ve known her. I’m not going to let anything happen to her.” Linda gave him a nod of encouragement.
“Go on, Mulder.” He leaned down and kissed her again, then followed Nikki over to the warming table. He stood on the far side of it so that he could face Scully as well. It actually felt strange not to feel her skin under his hands.
“He looks good Agent Mulder.” Nikki looked up at him, melting a little from her professional pose at his obvious emotion. “Let’s see, six pounds, two ounces, eighteen inches. Looks like he’s got your hair. Here, put your hand on him. He needs the reassurance.”
Mulder glanced up at her to see if she was kidding, him give reassurance? She wasn’t and he placed his hand gently on his son’s stomach, being careful to avoid the small bandage Nikki had placed there. He was so tiny; Mulder’s hand could almost cover him entirely. At his touch the child stopped fretting and seemed to focus on his father’s face. Mulder felt himself fall hopelessly in love with the boy.
Scully watched this from the other side of the room, tears still leaking slowly from her eyes. She had never believed she would see this sight. After the in vitro with Mulder had failed, she had finally allowed this dream to die. Well, she’d thought she had. He looked up, feeling her eyes and she smiled at him.
“Dana, how do you feel?”
“Exhausted, and happier than I ever remember feeling.”
Linda smiled, “I remember. Can you give me another push?”
Scully could feel Mulder tense from the other side of the room. She looked over at him. “It’s okay Mulder.” He didn’t look reassured, in fact he looked torn. She wanted to reassure him, but her body was demanding her attention now.
The afterbirth was delivered with no problem and Linda placed it in a plastic container and covered it with a sterile cloth. “This is what your friends are here for, right?”
“Yes. Just leave it there for now.” She glanced over at Mulder who nodded.
How the hell could he be in three places at once? He wasn’t comfortable trusting anyone with any of this. Unreasonable, but that’s how he felt.
“Agent Mulder?” Nikki drew his attention. “Why don’t you take your son over and let his mother meet him?”
“Yeah, I think that’s a great idea.” She finished wrapping the boy tightly and laid him carefully in his father’s arms.
Scully’s mouth opened slightly at the sight, her emotions overwhelming her again. “You okay Scully?”
“Never better.” Her voice shook, but he heard her truth.
Nikki arranged pillows behind her and Mulder carefully placed his child in her arms. A smile broke through the tears. “He’s beautiful.” She loosened the blankets a little. “Is he okay? Mulder?”
“The guys will have to tell us for sure, but he looks perfect. I counted, ten, ten and one.”
Scully looked up startled and then chuckled. She winced and he reached for her. “Didn’t we agree we wouldn’t make me laugh?”
“Right, sorry.”
“You need to get the stem blood to the guys, Mulder.”
He nodded, but he had no intention of leaving her, not even with Nikki and Linda. He picked up the container and moved to the door. He opened it, not stepping out, and wasn’t surprised to see Skinner and Doggett waiting just outside.
“Mulder, is she okay? We heard . . . “
“Yeah, she’s okay now.” A smile grew on his face. “It’s a boy.”
Skinner’s smile matched his own. Doggett glanced inside the room. “And the baby, Mulder, he’s okay?”
“As far as we can tell. I need you to take this to the guys.” He handed the container to Skinner.
“We’re on it. Tell her congratulations.”
“Come back by when things are under control, meet our kid.”
Skinner nodded, his smile growing even wider. Mulder returned to her side, though she hadn’t really been out of his sight. She looked up and silently asked the question.
“Taken care of. Everyone okay?”
“Dana,” Linda turned back to her, “do you want to try nursing him now?”
She glanced up at Mulder, shy suddenly and saw that though his face was slightly colored, his eyes were gleaming. “Uh, yes. I think so.”
“Do you want me to stay, or do you want some privacy?”
“Why don’t we call you if we need you?” Scully looked up at her friend, who smiled understandingly and nodded.
Once the door was shut she reached for the button on her smock. She found she couldn’t look up at Mulder, which was truly ludicrous given what he had just witnessed.
“It’s okay Scully.”
“I know. Could you hand me a damp cloth?”
He nodded and turned toward the sink. He heard her gasp and spun around, adrenaline pumping. “It’s okay. He’s definitely your son.” He looked down and saw that the baby had latched onto her breast but that otherwise nothing was really wrong.
“Hey, I’m not that rough.” He replied a little shakily, holding the dripping cloth in his hand.
“I bet you were at fourteen.” She watched the color rise on his face as he wrung out the cloth and returned to her side. “I want to hear the rest of that story, Mulder.”
“It’s not really that interesting.”
“A very quick tale?” She was watching as his head shot up and he saw
the amusement in her eyes.
“A little respect, woman. I’m a father now and you shouldn’t talk like that in front of the kid.”
“Yes sir.” She replied meekly and he had to laugh. She was watching the child nurse now so he took a seat on the bed beside her and did the same. It was nice being able to gaze at Scully’s breasts with impunity.
The baby fell asleep at the second breast and Scully handed him to Mulder and cleaned herself up, then reached for the baby again. Mulder returned him reluctantly and after a quick glance, Scully unwrapped the child to check him out for herself.
Mulder felt his eyes grow moist at the sight. He watched, not interfering with her investigation, relishing it instead.
They both jumped at the sound of a knock at the door and Mulder had his weapon out of the holster before she had her breath. “Who is it?”
“Skinner. May we come in?”
Mulder glanced over at Scully, who nodded. He walked to the door and opened it, checking to see that Skinner and Doggett were alone, then waved them in.
Skinner spotted the gun in his hand. “If this is a bad time . . .”
“Oh, sorry.” He reholstered his gun and moved back to her side. “Come see him.”
The two men complied, and looked at the baby in Scully’s arms. “That’s a fine looking boy, Agent Scully.” Doggett smiled at her, “Congratulations Mulder.”
“Thanks.” Mulder looked at him and Doggett heard the depth of the word. He nodded.
Skinner seemed overwhelmed at the sight, and said nothing. Mulder took the baby from Scully’s arms and placed him in Skinner’s. The look of panic was priceless, but Mulder dared not laugh.
“Mulder, no.”
“Get used to it. I’m not sure who the godmother might be for this little guy, but he seems to be bursting at the seams with godfathers.”
“I . . . I hope you know, I’ll do everything in my power to keep him safe.”
Mulder nodded, not able to speak and saw the tears once again trickle from her eyes.
“Mulder,” Scully swallowed, “I want to go home.” All three men gaped at her. “Please find Linda, I want to see when we can leave.”
“I’ll, uh, Mulder do you want me to find her?” Doggett offered.
He nodded, but everyone could all tell he wasn’t happy. The baby squirmed in Skinner’s arms. “ Uh, Mulder, maybe you better . . . “
Mulder managed to smile and take his son back into his own arms. He turned as the door opened and Mulder saw Skinner reach toward his gun from the corner of his eye. Linda stopped, realizing her mistake.
“Sorry, I wasn’t thinking.” She moved over to the bed. “How you doing?”
“When can I go home?”
Even Linda seemed a little taken aback at the request. “Uh, I’d say no less than twelve hours.”
“Linda, I’m a doctor.”
Linda nodded, “You’re a pathologist, not an OB or a pediatrician. You’ve nursed him one time. What if you start to bleed?”
Skinner froze, he shouldn’t be in here, but he didn’t want to draw attention to himself by leaving.
“I can’t let you go yet Dana. It would be irresponsible for both of us. Just relax, okay?”
Scully started to speak, then saw Mulder’s face. She took a deep breath and subsided. Skinner decided to seize the opportunity. “Mulder, we’ll be here as long as you want us.”
“Thanks. I’ll, uh, I’ll talk to you in a little while.” Skinner nodded and let himself out. Linda did a quick exam, then followed him.
“Don’t say it Mulder.”
“What? That I’m glad she wants us to stay here a little longer? I’m not sorry she wants to make sure you’re okay. Scully, I don’t know what you remember about the last few hours, but from my side . . . damn, Scully. I’ve never seen anything like that. I may never recover. I’m in awe of you. I sure as hell couldn’t have done it. Scully, I was scared. You must have been terrified.”
She shook her head slowly, as she took the baby from him. “No. No Mulder, I wasn’t scared. You were here. Bad things happen when you aren’t here, not when you are.”
He blinked and eased down onto the bed. “You don’t believe that.”
“Yes, I do. And if both of you want me to stay, I will.”
He just stared at her for a long moment. “Listen, while we’re talking about leaving; when we do take him home, I want to go to my apartment. At least until you’re back on your feet.”
She decided to ignore the ‘on your feet’ part. “Mulder, all of the baby’s things are at my place.”
“Well, not everything. I, uh, I bought some stuff to keep at my
apartment. I’m, I’m hoping you’ll
be spending a lot of time . . . “
“Mulder, I, I’d never keep him from you.”
“No, I know that. My apartment is just easier to secure. I mean, you’re on the ground floor, your back door opens onto an alley. It would be, you know, safer.”
After a moment she nodded. “Okay, I, I think that could be a, a good idea.”
He grinned at that, mostly with relief. “I shouldn’t press my luck, right?”
“Press your luck how?” She smiled suspiciously at him.
“You know, maybe find a bigger place, a two-bedroom, on an upper floor for the, the three of us?”
“You want . . . you want us to live together?”
“No, I want a lot more than that, but I’m not brave enough to ask.”
She stared at him then, not knowing what to say.
“Yeah, well . . . I guess I shouldn’t
have - “
“Mulder, if you’re talking about, about a commitment, I’m not expecting that. Today we experienced a miracle and we’re both very emotional, but you shouldn’t – “
“Scully, I didn’t start thinking about this today.”
“Mulder - “
“No, Scully. The truth is I starting thinking about this when, when the in vitro failed. When you asked me . . . when you wanted me to . . . “ He seemed to lean slightly toward her, seated there next to her.
“You thought about living with me?”
“Actually, I thought about marrying you.”
Her mouth fell open then and the baby squirmed as her arms involuntarily tightened.
“Maybe I ought to put him in his bassinet. I don’t want you to hurt him.”
Her eyes narrowed and she tried to glare at him, but allowed him to take the child and place him gently in the plastic bassinet.
“We shouldn’t be talking like this.” She watched Mulder resume his seat on her bed.
“Because you don’t want to or . . .?”
“Because of what we’ve been through today. I . . . I’m very vulnerable to you right now.”
“And that’s a bad thing?”
“Mulder. Look, I’ve agreed to come to your apartment with the baby. Don’t you think that’s enough?”
“Well,” he grinned, “I have to admit, it’s a big step. Almost more than I hoped for. We can talk about the rest of it later.”
She glanced over at their son and for just a second, he thought she nodded.
“Rest now, Scully. I’ll be right here and the others are just outside. You rest.”
She nodded and he helped her lie down and pulled the covers up over her. “What about you?”
“I’m good Scully. Hell, I’m damn near wonderful. You sleep, I’ll be right here.”
She smiled and after glancing over at the baby one more time, let her eyes slip closed. She reached for his hand without bothering to look, knowing, feeling his eyes on her. He took her hand and squeezed it. Yeah, she hadn’t shot down his idea completely and she wanted him here. Yeah, he was damn near wonderful.
